Max 5

17Sep09

i upgraded my Max/MSP 4.x license a few days ago.  i have to say that i like the new version a lot, its much…friendlier…i guess.  i never really got into Max, which is surprising since it cost quite a bit of money.  however, the new Max for Live in Ableton has got me back into the idea of creating my own simple effects.  So i am making my way through the tutorials, again, and hopefully i will have some skill when M4L comes out.  Max is yet another diversion, but i figure anything to get me back into making music is a good thing.

the next big dilemma in my life is what sample rate.  i have been testing the quality and comparing that against the additional system overhead to see if it is worth it.  not entirely sure i can tell the difference.  there may be one, i may not be  listening to the right material.  i am strongly leaning the way of 32bit/44.1kHz, since there are less resources consumed and i don’t have to worry about sample rate conversion or dithering.  unfortunatly, as in the previous post, this dilemma is another aviodant strategy.  its always a bit of a shock to openly discuss, so as of right now the decision is made.  moving on.

conclusions

after some soul searching i have decided that rather then wasting time stressing about sound quality i should just make music.  the only album i have completed was done in Live, and as I have never really done anything interesting in Logic, i am going to stop all this nonsense and move forward.  every year or so i have some crisis of faith in terms of this software or that software.  for the record i used to do it with hardware as well.  this crisis culminates in a false sense that my ability to make quality music is tied directly with the tools i use.  now, it may be the case that things do in fact sound different.  however, it is an excuse for my lack of output.  it is always easier to blame the tool than the user, when the user is you(error of misattribution i suppose).  feel sorry for me for being to stupid.  moving forward, i just want to make music.  i have all the tools i need.

except a Dave Smith Mopho, lol

the subject says it all.  i clicked on the link in my signature on the ableton site and ended up here.  i totally forgot that i pointed the dns to this site.

i guess an update is in order.  working on little bits here and there.  trying to get back in the swing of writing.  its tough to do with work and school and relationships to maintain.  i did pick up a new audio interface.  its a tc electronic konnekt 6 and it sounds so much better that my old m-audio one.  like night and day.  sadly, in using it, i realized that i am not too happy with the sound in ablton live.  for whatever reason, logic sounds much better.  the stero field is wider and separation is better.  not sure what to do since i really do love live for many reasons.  i am hopeful that it is a problem that can be fixed with some mixing.

i hope to keep writing here.  i would like to make this a place for my creative side as a whole and not just music.  if you read this let me know you are out there.

Working

12Mar09

Looks like all of the music i’ve had stored at various sites have dissappeared.  Couple that with the tragic loss of my RAID 1 array and there is pretty much nothing left.  I have an original copy of TLOPC and one live show on CD that I will burn and add to the Bandcamp site.  All i can do is start again.

NAMM

13Jan09

NAMM is here, the annual trade show that all the musical equipment manufacturers debut their latest and greatest. Always a fun time of year for me as I really enjoy all the buzz and press releases and such. Since I don’t really buy hardware, and have settled on my Logic Pro/Reason combo there aren’t any new purchases for me on the horizon. It is interesting, though, to see the direction instrument manufacturers are heading. I have heard that the Ableton/Cycling 74 partnership is about to bare fruit so be on the lookout. I hope that announcement it isn’t too exciting, as I am not in the mood to go back to Ableton.
